The Powwow ArenaThe arena is where the powwow takes place. The host drum is placed in the middle of the arena under the arbor, along with the other drums. The dance circle and the audience seating surround the arbor. At each of the four directions of the circle is an opening designated by flags. Grand entry starts at the eastern gate. The emcee's stand is another center of activity. At Lake Geneva, it is raised, allowing the emcee to view the entire arena. Giveaways are held here, and announcements are made. The colors (flags) are posted in the arena during grand entry and retrieved at the end of each session. The eagle staff, flags of the United States and Canada, and flags of the various branches of military service are carried in by veterans. The eagle staff, a staff about five or six feet high with eagle feathers attached, serves as the flag for Native Americans. Individual tribes are also often represented by their flags. Outside the circle of seats, the vendors set up their booths. They are often a highlight for visitors, who find the arts and crafts they sell very attractive. Powwow prices are often lower than anywhere else, and vendors are happy to answer questions about their wares. |
